Seeb, Sultanate of Oman

With the RACE START on Sunday, 10th September, we are expecting the Solent to be heaving with hundreds of
pleasure-craft. Some of our team's supporters have their Isle of Man flags at the ready. |

R & R - With no more training days for the full team on the water and with the yacht having its bottom cleaned in
Lymington, I've taken the opportunity to have a few days' rest and relaxation in Seeb, near Muscat. It feels like the calm before the storm, a period of relative tranquility away from the hustle and bustle of life on
board and all that it entails. This means that, at last, I have had time to scan more photos which are now scattered throughout the site! Take a look, for example, at the crew photos
.......and on the subject of storms..... |

PERFECT STORM - We decided to go and see whether the film of Sebastian Junger's book matched up, that and race research, of
course! Whilst the critics gave the film mediocre to poor reviews, we found that it was quite riveting. A five star recommendation from here! |

On the left is the skipper, Lin Parker. Not only is she hugely competent and experienced, she is also extremely
focussed on doing everything that is possible to make the boat go faster!
On the right is the yacht at St Katharine's Dock during London week. |

And that's me! I have learnt a lot since that first training sail in December, 1997, and I've been through
quite a few ordeals, what with strong winds, freezing cold, big seas and a few 'sail-changes from hell', as we have come to call them. Along with everyone else, I have occasionally asked myself, 'Why am I
doing this?' when it would be easier (less expensive and more safe) to stay in the comfort zone. Frankly, I'm still not sure what the answer is. |

What I do know, is that the BT Global Challenge has offered me the chance to have the experience of a lifetime - and I'm
definitely up for it! |

FEWER DISTRACTIONS = SHARPER FOCUS - With on board Internet access being limited to 30 minutes per week, there will be
no time at all to casually surf the Net. E-mails received by crew on the 'Isle of Man' will be limited to 5 each per week. This is good in many ways in that, crew will be distracted less by non-essential messages.
