There are many ways of communicating at sea nowadays. One way is by radio. To ensure that messages are clear and understood,  the phonetic alphabet is used. So a sailor using a radio in one yacht can spell something very clearly to a sailor far away by using these special internationally recognised words. Try saying them out loud.

IDEAS TO TRY
1. Cover the right hand column. How many of the words can you remember?
2. Can you spell your name out loud using these words?
    Now try these: mother, school, homework, birthday, zoo
3. Spell out a message for your partner to write down,
    i.e. HOTEL, ECHO, LIMA, LIMA, OSCAR = HELLO
4. Practise spelling the letters of words you see around you.
5. In a group of three, A competes against B to say  in code a word given by C.
    Who is the fastest?
