2) Because they were superstitious.

Grammar
3) The main verbs are
     rose / thought / was / had crowed
4) rose - past simple,  to rise: thought - past simple, to think; was - past simple,  to be:
     had crowed - past  perfect, to crow.
5) Because the crowing happened further in the past.
